The world’s wise men made fools.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1st Corinthians 1:18-21
God abhors arrogance from a people who are inherently unrighteous and deserving of his condemnation and wrath. Those who are wise in the world, the intellectuals who are self-sufficient in their ability and circumstance, are made fools as they reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ, trading eternity in heaven for temporal, momentary pleasures of their desire.
God chooses the lowly, not the mighty.
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 1st Corinthians 1:26-31
God takes pleasure in the “foolishness” of preaching that saves the lowly, the humble, the childlike, those who are despised, the weak, the “deplorables.” Not many are wise in the world; mighty and noble are called. No flesh should glory in the presence of God, but those in Christ will be made spiritually wise, deemed righteous, sanctified, and redeemed from the penalty of sin.
It is interesting that when humanity and its institutions become advanced in knowledge and understanding without God, they degrade into depravity, perversion, and unrighteousness.
The power of the gospel is in its truth.
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1st Corinthians 2:1-5
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a simple message of the truth of salvation. It requires no clever presentation, no slick words. The effectiveness of the message on the soul is from the power of God. The wisdom of God is revealed, leading to an understanding of the incredible gift from God, freely given to us by his grace. The wisdom of the world leads to nothing.
We cannot comprehend the things God has in store for us.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1st Corinthians 2:9
God’s revelation to man is limited. We cannot comprehend what God has in store for his children. We can be sure that what he has prepared for “them that love him’ will be the very best from any perspective. In God we trust.
The natural man cannot understand spiritual things.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ. 1st Corinthians 2:14-16
Understanding and faith come from the Holy Spirit of God. By the Spirit we are enlightened and guided. By the Spirit and have the perspective, desires, and conscience of Christ, we can judge and discern all things. But the natural (profane & secular) man has no light and does not believe – because he cannot believe.
Our eternal foundation is Christ.
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.1st Corinthians 3:13-15
The only true spiritual foundation is Jesus Christ (not works, rituals, piety, mysticism, etc.). When we build on that spiritual foundation by living in accordance with the truth and acting on God’s commands, we construct something of eternal value, and God will reward us abundantly in Heaven. This is the test of life in which we are engaged. Endure trials (fire), persist as a child of God in this life, and take hold of the prize. Living in a stupor, with stunted spiritual growth and understanding, means you will not build anything of value, and what you have built will be destroyed when tested. You cannot lose your salvation (ever!), but your position and blessings in Heaven will be less, and you will suffer loss.
Every positive attribute or skill that you have was given to you.
For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 1st Corinthians 4:7
Everything you have is a gift from God. Who you are, what you are, your lot, your talent, your attractive attributes, your prosperity, and your skill are all from God. Nothing is from yourself, so be humble and grateful for the unmerited blessings of God.
We are all sinners in need of a savior.
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1st Corinthians 6:9-11
We are all unrighteous, but we have been forgiven (washed), set apart and transformed (sanctified), reconciled (justified) to God. This is another reason to cultivate humility and gratitude towards God.
Sexual immorality is a sin against the temple of God.
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1st Corinthians 6:18-20
Your body belongs to God; it is a temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. We should not defile ourselves with fornication or adultery. This is a destructive sin, destroying the soul from within. Do not dishonor God and yourself by becoming one with a strange woman or man.
Execute this test of life with obedience, discipline, and faith.
Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1st Corinthians 9:24-27
We run this race for imperishable rewards, so run it well. Be disciplined and exercise self-control so that your testimony is not disqualified.
We are never tempted beyond God’s provision.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1st Corinthians 10:13
Temptations are tests. To be tempted is not an evil thing; it is our performance in these tests that matters. God will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to resist if we stand solid in the faith. We should be alert and humble, as we may fall if we are not on guard and focused on a walk that pleases God.
Do all things to the glory of God.
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. 1st Corinthians 10:31-33
Though we are free to dismiss rituals and traditions that do not matter, we are not free to insult or harm another man’s conscience. We should do all for the welfare of others, and that is not possible if we have introduced conflict. Do everything to the glory of God. This may mean accommodating others so that they may be saved.
Love (charity)
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. I Corinthians 10:13
All the good you do is just noise if it doesn’t come from love. You are worthless in all you do if you do not have love. Expressing love towards others is a form of self-sacrifice on their behalf.
To love your neighbor is to demonstrate the qualities of Christ in how we treat our fellow man. Instinctively, man loves what he desires, what he enjoys, what is of benefit to himself. Contrary to that, and consistent with the character of Jesus, we are to seek the benefit of others above ourselves, to serve, to edify, and to testify to the unsurpassed love of God to the people we encounter during our time on earth.
In the verses above, Paul presents 16 qualities of love. These verbs are things you do, not feelings or attitudes, though you can certainly have affection for those you love. Additionally, these qualities pertain to how you interact with others, rather than how you expect others to treat you. To love like this is hard. It requires divine assistance as these qualities are often absent in the natural man. To love others in this way is a hallmark of a truly saved soul. To love your family and friends is a good thing. But just as Jesus loved us when we were his adversaries, when we love our enemies, that is true Christian greatness. Take your time with this list and read it thoughtfully.

- Kind
- Not jealous (envieth not),
- Does not brag about itself (vaunteth not itself),
- Humble (not puffed up),
- Not rude or unbecoming (not behave itself unseemly),
- Not self-serving (seeketh not her own),
- Tolerant, not irritable (not easily provoked),
- Does bot dwell not on wrongs, thinking of vengeance (thinketh no evil),
- Unhappy when bad things happen to others (rejoiceth not in iniquity),
- Joyous when righteousness prevails (rejoiceth in the truth),
- Holds up to hurts and wounds (bears all things),
- Believes the best of others (believes all things),
- Expects the best outcome (hopes all things),
- Never gives up (endures all things),
- Love never ends. (never faileth).
In marriage, if you and your spouse consistently demonstrate these qualities to each other, how much more likely is it that you will be in love until the end?
The primary spiritual objective in loving others as Christ loved us is not necessarily reciprocation, although that is a welcome byproduct. Instead, it is to develop your character, strengthen your faith and reliance on God, and be an example that leads others to know Christ. Remember that this life is a test for the next. If you love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself, you will discover joy, peace, and love that surpass all understanding.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet (qualified) to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1st Corinthians 15:3-10
Jesus died for our sins and was raised on the third day, as prophesied in the Scriptures. He was seen by many people: the 12 apostles, more than 500 others, and then by Paul on the road to Damascus. Christ is the only one who was raised to a glorified body and never died again.
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 1st Corinthians 15:17-20
If Jesus was not raised, then our faith is worthless and there is no hope for mankind.
If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die. 1st Corinthians 15:32
The resurrection is the reason to pursue Christ and salvation. Why bother with sacrifice if there is no reward of resurrection from the grave? If there is no resurrection (raised on the last day), then we should “eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” There is no incentive for salvation, sanctification, holiness, or righteousness without the resurrection.
The rapture of the church and the end of death.
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1st Corinthians 15:51-58
Sequence of Resurrection: Christ is first to rise #1. All who died in Christ will be raised to life at his coming at the rapture of the church. Also, those living at the rapture will not endure death, but will be taken up to Christ. #2. Those who come to Christ after the rapture will be raised at the end of the tribulation (tribulation saints) #3. The Old Testament saints will also be raised at the end of the tribulation #4. (1 – 4 is the first resurrection). All who are in Adam will be raised to damnation at the end, after all the enemies of Jesus are subdued (enemies put under his feet, even death is defeated). This is the second resurrection, the White Throne Judgment.
Our Body in Resurrection – we will each have a unique body after we are raised. We will have a body of glory, power, and spirituality. We will be “heavenly” and not “earthly.” We will not have the body of corruption, decay, and death, but instead a body of life that is incorruptible, eternal, honorable, and in radiant glory.
The Moment of Resurrection – the rapture of the church. Instantly, when Jesus comes for his saints, all who are alive will be changed in the “twinkling of an eye.” No death experience for those who present at His appearing. Please come, lord Jesus.
Victory of Resurrection– Death is defeated! To die in sin is to experience the sting of eternal damnation. Jesus has given us victory over sin by faith in Him. For the believer, there is no uncovered sin, and we avoid the sting of condemnation. Christ took the sting for us.
Practicality of the Resurrection – Because of our imminent resurrection, validation that our faith is not in vain, we are to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.
The competent Christian.
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. 1st Corinthians 16:13-14
I like the New American Standard translation. . . Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, and be strong. All that you do must be done in love. There is a great deal packed into this short verse about living a life of consequence as a Christian.
- Watch ye – to be alert, awake, and to know what is going on. Be aware of what the adversary is doing and what is going on in your life. Do not exist in a spiritual stupor where you fall prey to Satan, temptation, apathy, or false doctrine.
- Stand fast in the faith – to be firm in what you believe and what you know to be true. Do not let human wisdom infect and twist your faith. The lies and garbage of the world are incompatible with the revelation of God.
- Quit you like men – to act like men. That is to be mature and courageous. Do not be childish in your understanding of the word.
- Be strong – be strengthened by the lord and the power of his might. Resist temptation and be resolute in seeking and following the will of God.
- Let all your things be done with charity – Do all this with an attitude of love – a love that is not an emotion but self-sacrificing service to the one in need. We should complement a staunch defense of the faith with brotherly love.
Being spiritually alert, steadfast, mature, and strong in love will enable you to become what God wants you to be. Living by these principles results in a powerful, transformed life. Those who remain spiritually stunted, oblivious to the pursuit of the faith, are at great risk of being devoured by our adversary.
